Bicycle Accidents in Missouri
Reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that the most common cause of death to bicyclists is motor vehicle accidents. Unfortunately, crashes are also one of the most common causes of severe injuries to those who are traveling on two wheels.
Like motorcyclists and other pedestrians, people traveling on bicycles lack the protection that they need during accidents. As a result, they are more likely to suffer severe injuries that require extensive medical treatment.
These incidents often cause trauma to the head, neck, and spine due to the impact between the cyclist and the vehicle. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), including concussions, can occur when riders are thrown off their bikes or strike their heads against the windshield or pavement upon collision.
Additionally, fractures and dislocations are common among bicyclists involved in car crashes; wrists, arms, shoulders, hips, legs, and ribs are particularly at risk due to direct contact or forceful impacts during accidents. In some cases, cyclists may also sustain severe spinal cord injuries that could lead to temporary or permanent paralysis depending on the extent of damage.
